Premier français post.
Desole pour mon francais mediocre.

French, Week 16

The words to study are getting overwhelming now.
Just hope this is temporary.

Last week’s mnemonic tip is working wonders though.
I am learning and remembering more words faster.

And now I see why the app is not yet giving me lots of sentences.
It wants me to build up a core vocabulary.

And the time I give it is not much.
So it will all come with time.
(The way the words flow, in my head, is a bit easier now)
I just need to be patient and keep at it.

Some weeks, you feel like you go through the motions.
This was not one of those weeks.

Made a small breakthrough that helps me now remember words faster, when I add images to my app.
Now in addition to the images for the word, I also add an image that might help me remember how the word actually ‘sounds’.

For example, this is word I have to learn. Singe.
Singe is monkey, in French.
So here’s a monkey … of sorts.

The thing with ‘this’ monkey though is that, he’s singing.
And my brain goes … hmmm … singing monkey … singing … sing … Singe!

Like Trinity says, “That’s a nice trick!” :)

Will do this with all new cards now.
And the old ones that I find hard to remember.

This week was a slog.
Kept at it.
Specially after reading this.
Can understand phrases, here and there now.
So, that’s progress. :)

This was a boring week.
But I kept at it.
If I think, I have made progress, all I need to do is listen to a podcast.
And then I understand how far I still have to go.

Still at the stage where I am adding words to my basic vocabulary and doing review.
But there is steady, incremental progrgess.

Didn’t listen to podcasts.
But kept up with the app.

I can now listen to the french sentences in the app and kind of get it.
No so yet, with stuff outside.

But I somehow think, I’m gaining the teensiest bit of fluency.

French, seems to be the only thing that I do regularly.
Probably because it takes me only 45 minutes to an hour daily.
(And that is because I am dumb and slow and deliberate. I’m sure other folks must be doing this is 10-20 minutes)

While I thought I was making progress, I had a funny sort of realisation when a friend asked me if I could speak and carry on a basic conversation in French.
And I realised, I couldn’t. I could not even understand words (or a sense of what they might convey outside of the little, I was learning daily.)

So I think I will try listening to podcasts in French, in order to get a sense of the rhythm and flow of the language.
Will write back in a couple of months to record, if there has been improvement.

Similar sounding words are an absolute murder on the ears.
I can’t figure out moo and moue, kip and keep, and lots of bonne and bun.

Coasting along this week, not stretching too much.
Just doing enough, so I do not fall off the wagon.
Having fun reading every word with r with the french ʁ sound :)

It’s going swimmingly well so far.
Still in the phase where there is an avalanche of stuff coming at me.
But a few tiny things, I know now.
Which is how I know I am making progress.

P.S. Crazy idea that just struck me, would to start writing these updates in french as soon as I am able!

This was a week of learning to work at it.
Lots of fun.
Managed to keep up with daily lessons in the Fluent Forever app. Am having trouble with the guttural ʁ sound.
Hopefully will get better at it with practice.

Finished reading the fluent forever book.
Tried creating flash cards when i got a mail telling about the just launched app.
Have been using it to start with French.

It truly is a timesaver.

I know because I have been creating flash cards for a year now and it takes a significant amount of time.
It is really cool to have all my resources in one place.

Have stuck to the plan diligently.

Right now the focus is on wathching short videos and building up flash cards for vocabulary and for words that sound similar.

More next week …
